...The original claim of environmental music was to create a stable sound space between humans and the environment, but as it spread, it led to the paradoxical result of forcing people to listen to music they did not want to hear, and today, background music, a representative form of modern functional music, is plagued with major problems. Canadian musician R.M. Schafer (1933- ) criticized the negative effects of background music and, with the idea of ​​soundscape, is exploring the nature of environmental music that aims to harmonize humans with the outside world. Among the fields of musicology, music sociology, which studies the relationship between music and society, has lagged behind music history and music aesthetics, with fewer papers published on the subject, but since the 1960s, its importance has been recognized and it has rapidly attracted attention.
