(1) The common logarithm of a positive number A can generally be written as log A = n + log A ', where n is an integer and log A ' is the positive fractional part, 0≦ log A '＜1. In this case, the integer part n is called the index or characteristic, and the fractional part log A ' is called the mantissa. (2) Nowadays, (1) has been repurposed to mean that in floating-point representation, the part expressed as a decimal, for example, 2.99873 × 10 ⁸ , is called the mantissa.
