At his parents' request, he became a law student in Debrecen, but abandoned his studies and became a newspaper reporter in various places. Confronted with Hungary's backwardness, he became acquainted with progressive people in Nagybalad (now Oradeja), and eventually went to study in Paris, where he became even more devoted to French Symbolist poets such as Baudelaire.
