Whirlwind - Senpu

A small rotating vortex of wind, also called a crosswind or whirlwind. When accompanied by sand and dust, it is called a dust whirl or dust devil. When it occurs over the ocean, it sucks up seawater and is called a waterspout. Those seen in the central plains region of the United States are slightly larger and are called tornadoes.

小規模な回転する風の渦巻で、辻風(つじかぜ)、つむじ風ともいう。砂塵(さじん)を伴う場合は塵旋風(じんせんぷう)dust whirl, dust devilという。これが海上で発生するときは、海水を吸い上げ、竜巻waterspoutとよばれる。アメリカ合衆国の中部平原地方でみられるものは、やや規模が大きく、トルネードtornadoとよばれる。
