Holy Roman Emperor (reigned 1576-1612), King of Hungary, and King of Bohemia. A member of the House of Habsburg, he was the son of Maximilian II and grew up in the court of Philip II. He is considered an eccentric emperor who caused the political and religious turmoil that led to the Thirty Years' War, but in recent years his cultural achievements, in which he patronized artists such as Spranger, Hans von Aachen, and Arcimboldo, as well as scholars such as Tycho Brahe, Kepler, Bruch, Dee, and Comenius, and made Prague a major base for Northern Mannerism, have been reevaluated. He was also famous as a collector of works by Dürer and Bruegel the Elder.

神聖ローマ皇帝（在位1576年―1612年），ハンガリー王，ボヘミア王。ハプスブルク家出身で，マクシミリアン２世の子。フェリペ２世の宮廷に育った。三十年戦争に至る政治的・宗教的混乱を招いた奇人皇帝とされるが，スプランヘル，ハンス・フォン・アーヘン，アルチンボルドらの芸術家，さらにティコ・ブラーエ，ケプラー，ブルーフ，ディー，コメニウスらの学者を庇護して，プラハを北方マニエリスムの一大拠点となした文化的功績が近年再評価されている。デューラー，ブリューゲル（父）の収集家としても高名。
