…From the Neolithic to the Bronze Age in northwestern Europe, there are many remains made of huge stones, collectively known as megalithic monuments. Representative examples include Stonehenge in England and the Cromlech of Carnac in France, which is a row of nearly 3,000 standing stones, both of which are said to be related to sun worship. Although unrelated to agricultural rituals, stone circles are also found in the Jomon culture of Japan.

The Welsh name Cromlech is sometimes used, and those that are connected by placing lintels on top of the standing stones are sometimes called henges.
