Also written as Tenshu or Tonomori, and also known as Tenshukaku. The Yagura tower is the central feature of castle architecture, and is said to have developed from watchtowers on residences during the Sengoku period, becoming sturdy enough to double as a military facility. After the Battle of Sekigahara, the structure was improved, with many three- and five-story exteriors and more aesthetic elements, such as the use of a white plasterwork technique. During the Edo period, it was valued as a symbol of the authority of the castle lord, and became increasingly decorative. →Castles→Related topics Honmaru | Matsuyama Castle | Matsuyama Castle | Maruoka Castle | Mushamado Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
