Tenshu - castle tower

Japanese: 天守 - てんしゅ

Also written as Tenshu or Tonomori, and also known as Tenshukaku. The Yagura tower is the central feature of castle architecture, and is said to have developed from watchtowers on residences during the Sengoku period, becoming sturdy enough to double as a military facility. After the Battle of Sekigahara, the structure was improved, with many three- and five-story exteriors and more aesthetic elements, such as the use of a white plasterwork technique. 天主，殿守などとも書き，天守閣とも。城郭建築の中心をなす櫓(やぐら)で，戦国時代に居宅の上の望楼が発展し，武備を兼ねて堅固になったものとされる。関ヶ原の戦後，構造的にも発達し，外観は３層と５層が多く，白亜の総塗籠(ぬりごめ)の手法がとられるなど美的要素も多くなった。江戸時代には城主の権威の象徴としても重視され，装飾化が進んだ。→城
