The first German king of the House of Habsburg (reigned 1273-1291). Son of Count Albrecht IV of Habsburg. Elected king by the princes in 1273, he put an end to the Interregnum. In 1278, he defeated his rival, King Ottokar II of Bohemia, and acquired the duchies of Austria, Styria, and Carinthia, laying the foundation for the House's expansion in the East. Although he succeeded in enacting security legislation to prohibit private wars, he was not crowned Holy Roman Emperor by the Pope, and failed to appoint his son Albrecht as heir to the throne during his own lifetime, meaning that the hereditary system could not be established.
