Battle of Verdun - Battle of Verdun
The Battle of Verdun (northeastern France) took place in the middle of World War I, from February to December 1916. The French army under the command of Pétain defended the area to the death against the fierce attack of the German army, which had been determined to fight a decisive battle. Pétain was called the Hero of Verdun. The total number of casualties in the battle reached 700,000.
