The largest conglomerate in India, it is at the heart of the Indian economy. JN Tata (1839-1904) established a spinning mill in 1874 and Tata Steel in 1907. It grew through both world wars and controlled over 50 companies in the fields of steel, which accounted for about 80% of domestic production, as well as electricity, machinery, cotton, and finance.
