Odilon Redon

French painter and printmaker. Born in Bordeaux. Shortly after birth, he was placed in foster care in Peile-le-Bard in the Gironde, where his lonely childhood became the source of Redon's fantasies. At the age of 11, he returned to his parents' home in Bordeaux, and at 15, he began to study painting seriously under the watercolorist Stanislas Gorin. However, his encounters with the fantasy printmaker Rodolphe Bresdin (1822/1825-1885) and the botanist Armand Crabaud had a decisive influence on Redon's art. It was not until 1879, when he published his first collection of lithographs, In Dreams, that Redon attracted public attention, but in the meantime, he studied in the class of Léon Gérôme at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, and, influenced by Corot, stayed in Barbizon, where he produced landscape paintings. Degas praised the beauty of the black in Redon's lithographs as unsurpassed, but it is said that Redon began to create lithographs, which are a major attraction of his art, because he followed the advice of Fantin-Latour to use his accumulated charcoal drawings. After publishing "In Dreams," which is full of strangeness and fantasy, he produced a series of lithograph collections such as "To Edgar Poe," "Homage to Goya," and "The Temptation of Saint Anthony," which won praise from Huysmans and Mallarmé. After he turned 50, Redon entered the world of color with oil paints and pastels. Redon's color paintings, which are based on themes such as flowers, people, and mythology, are filled with pure and innocent beauty and mysterious light, as if something that had been sleeping in the black had suddenly awakened. He died in Paris in 1916, in the midst of World War I.

At a time when the Impressionist movement was gaining momentum and artists were turning their attention to depicting the light of the outside world, Redon's art, which opened up a unique field of painting by turning solely to the inner self, is sometimes considered a forerunner of fin de siècle Symbolism and 20th century Surrealism. His works include "À soi-même" (1922) and "Letters of Redon" (1923), both published posthumously.

フランスの画家、版画家。ボルドーに生まれる。生後まもなくジロンド県のペイルルバードに里子に出され、ここでの孤独な少年時代がルドンの幻想の源となった。11歳でボルドーの両親の家に戻り、15歳のときから水彩画家スタニスラス・ゴランにつき本格的な絵の勉強を始めたが、幻想の版画家ブレダンRodolphe Bresdin（1822／1825―1885）や植物学者アルマン・クラボーに出会ったことが、ルドンの芸術に決定的な影響を与えた。ルドンが世間的な注目を浴びるのは、最初の石版画集『夢の中で』を出版する1879年まで待たねばならないが、その間、パリの美術学校でレオン・ジェロームの教室に学んだり、コローの影響を受けてバルビゾンに滞在して風景画を制作したりしている。ドガはルドンの石版画の黒の美しさを無上のものとして褒めたたえているが、ルドンがその芸術の大きな魅力となる石版画をつくるようになったのは、描きためた木炭画を利用するのに、ファンタン・ラトゥールの助言に従ったためといわれている。怪奇と幻想にあふれた『夢の中で』を出版して以来、『エドガー・ポーに』『ゴヤ賛』『聖アントワーヌの誘惑』などの石版画集が矢つぎばやに制作され、ユイスマンスやマラルメなどの称賛を得ている。ルドンは50歳を過ぎるころから、油彩やパステルによる色彩の世界に入る。花や人物、神話などをテーマとしたルドンの色彩画は、それまで黒のなかに眠り続けていたものが突然に目覚めたかのように、無垢(むく)で純粋な美しさと神秘な光をたたえている。1916年、第一次世界大戦のさなかにパリで没した。

　印象主義の運動が盛んになり、外界の光を描写することに画家の目が向いていた時代、ひたすら心の内側に目を向けて独自の画境を開いたルドンの芸術は、世紀末の象徴主義や20世紀のシュルレアリスムの先駆者として位置づけられることもある。自著に、没後出版された『私自身に』À soi-même（1922）、『ルドンの手紙』（1923）がある。
