He was a goldsmith and enameler active in the Rhine-Meuse (Meuse) River basin (Mosin region) from the end of the 12th century to the beginning of the 13th century, and is one of the leading craftsmen of the Gothic period. His birth and death years and life are unknown. His known works include the Klosterneuburg Altar (1181), which consists of 51 enamel panels with signatures and dates, and the Reliquary of the Virgin Mary at Tournai Cathedral (1205).
