Luigi Russolo

Luigi Russolo

Italian painter and composer. He was initially interested in music, but in 1901 he moved to Milan, where he worked as an apprentice in painting restoration while devoting himself to painting. In 1909, he exhibited a copperplate print at the "Black and White" exhibition held in Milan, where it was recognized. From 1911 to 1913, he was active as a Futurist painter, but after announcing a manifesto entitled "Noise Art" in 1913, he participated in the Futurist movement mainly from the musical field. He gave provocative concerts of Futurist noise, starting in Milan with his own "intonarumori" (noise instruments), then Genoa, London, and after World War I in Paris (1921). These concerts attracted the attention of Barès, and became the forerunner of the later Musique Concrète. After returning to Italy in 1934, he devoted himself to mysticism, and in his later years, for a short period, he painted in a style different from Futurism. His major musical works include "Meeting of Automobiles and Aeroplanes," "Awakening of the City," and "Lunch on a Hotel Terrace" (all 1913-14).
