An evergreen, good-looking shrub of the Malpighiaceae family (illustration). Native to Mexico, it is cultivated in greenhouses. It grows to a height of just over 1m, with finely branched branches. The leaves are opposite, ovate to oblong ovate, glabrous, and whitish-green on the underside. The flowers grow in racemes at the ends of the branches, 1cm in diameter, with yellow petals that have serrated edges. The fruit is a capsule divided into three chambers. A heated greenhouse is required for cultivation. There are about 15 species of Malpighiaceae in Central and South America, all of which are shrubs, and two or three species are cultivated for ornamental purposes. The Malpighiaceae family is common in South America, and is a tropical family of mostly small shrubs, with about 60 genera and 800 known species.
