A method of separating heavy minerals contained in sedimentary rocks and analyzing them to study the properties of the strata. Among the constituent minerals of sediments and sedimentary rocks, those with a specific gravity of 2.8 or more are called heavy minerals, and those with a specific gravity of less than that are called light minerals. Light minerals such as quartz and feldspars make up the majority of sediments, and the heavy mineral content is generally small. For this reason, separation and concentration are necessary. The method is to wash the soft sediments with water, or crush the consolidated sediments or sedimentary rocks to an appropriate grain size, and then concentrate and separate the heavy minerals using heavy liquid.

堆積岩に含まれる重鉱物を分離し，その解析によって地層の諸性質を検討する方法。堆積物および堆積岩の構成鉱物の中で比重2.8以上のものを重鉱物と呼び，それ以下のものを軽鉱物と呼ぶ。堆積物などの多くの部分を占めるのは石英，長石類などの軽鉱物であり，重鉱物の含有量は一般に少量である。このため分離濃縮をしなければならない。その方法は，軟らかい堆積物であれば水洗後，また固結した場合と堆積岩であれば粉砕して適当な粒度にそろえたのち，重液を用いて重鉱物の濃縮･分離を行う。
