A French orientalist who stayed in China as a trading company employee, returned to Paris and taught at the School of Oriental Languages and the University of Paris, and became a member of the Academy. He excelled in philology and compiled the great work "Chinese Bibliography." In addition, he used documents from the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs to study China's international relations, and wrote two books translated by Eul, revised and expanded versions of "The Travels of Marco Polo" and "The Record of China's Eastward Expedition" (both in English), as well as "General History of China," which included diplomatic relations from ancient times to the end of the Qing Dynasty, and contributed greatly to the academic world. He also worked hard to establish and maintain the pan-European journal of oriental studies, " T'oung Pao ," published by the Dutch publisher Brill, which has been in publication since 1890 and is highly regarded academically.
