Basil's Cathedral (English name: Khram Vasiliya Blazhennogo)
A cathedral in Moscow's Red Square. Built in 1555-60 by Ivan IV to commemorate his victory over the Mongols, it was dedicated to the Virgin Mary, the mediator of victory. It is considered a masterpiece of medieval Russian architecture. Its official name is Pokrovskii sobor chto na rvu. Its common name, Vasily Blazhennyi, comes from the chapel of St. Basil, which was added to the northeast corner in 1588. It is a unique church with a tower-like main building about 46 meters high, typical of Russia, around which eight similarly tower-like chapels are arranged and connected by single-story corridors. When it was first built, the color and form were simple, but in the 17th century the dome was changed to an onion shape, a peaked roof was added to the outer corridor, and it was painted in a gorgeous style.
