In the mid-1960s, while detente (easing of tensions) between the United States and the Soviet Union was progressing, the US military intervention in Vietnam was in full swing. On the other hand, the conflict between conservatives and progressives within each country broke through the barriers that had existed up to that point and expanded to the entire region.
