Rudaki (English spelling) Abū 'Abd Allāh Ja'far Rūdaki

Persian poet. Born in Rudak near Samarkand, he took the name Rudaki after his birthplace. Known as the "Father of Poets" and the "Emperor of Poets," he is the greatest poet of early Persian poetry. He served as a court poet to the Samanid dynasty's Nasr II and was praised as the "flower of the Bukhara court," but in his later years he was not well-liked. He is said to have composed more than 100,000 lines of poetry in all poetic forms, including anthems, lyric poems, epics, and quatrains, but most of them have been lost and only about 1,000 lines remain. He established the foundations of the Khorasan style, which is the mainstream of classical Persian poetry. Characterized by a simple, straightforward style of writing, he is also famous as the poet of "Kalila and Dimna," which originated from an Indian tale.
