A village in Takaoka County, in the mid-west of Kochi Prefecture. Population 2,907 (1995). Located on the south bank of the upstream Niyodo River, it borders Ehime Prefecture to the northwest. The Niyodo River flows east along the border with Agawa Village, Agawa County to the north, and the Choja River and Iwaya River flow north from the southern part of the village to join it. Most of the village area is steep mountainous. From the Middle Ages to the early modern period, the mountainous area in the northeastern part of Takaoka County was collectively called Befuyama, and the village area is located in the Nishimorina and Betetsuna areas of that area. During the Edo period, it was the fief of the Fukao clan, a chief retainer of the Tosa clan, and there was strict control and conscription of mountain specialties such as paper and tea, leading to uprisings and turmoil.
