Book of Joel

One of the twelve minor prophets in the Old Testament. Nothing is known about the prophet Joel other than that he is said to be the son of Pethuel, but the book's contents suggest that it was written in Jerusalem or nearby around 400-350 BC. Joel saw a foreshadowing of the Day of the Lord (the last day) in the great plague of locusts that struck the land of Judah, and after urging his people to true repentance, he describes the scene of the Day of the Lord using apocalyptic literary colors. The Day of the Lord will bring abundant blessings to the people of Israel who repent and call on the name of the Lord, but it will mean devastating judgment for the nations that oppress them.

『旧約聖書』のなかの十二小預言書の一つ。預言者ヨエルについてはペトエルの子といわれているほかに何もわからないが、本書は内容からみて、紀元前400～前350年ごろにエルサレムあるいはその付近で書かれたものと思われる。ヨエルは、ユダの地を襲ったイナゴの大災害のなかに主の日（終末の日）の予兆をみ、同胞に真実の悔い改めを勧めたのち、主の日の光景を黙示文学的色彩を用いて描く。主の日は、悔い改めて主の名をよぶイスラエルの民には豊かな祝福となるが、その民を圧迫する諸民族には破滅的な審判を意味する。
