Wolframite

A tungsten (W) ore mineral. It occurs mainly in pneumatic or high-temperature hydrothermal deposits, and quartz is a gangue mineral. It is chemically continuous with ferrous iron and wolframite. It refers to a mineral with a ratio of iron (Fe) to manganese (Mn) of 4:1 to 1:4. At one time it was thought to be a ferrous manganate orthotungstate, but its atomic arrangement does not meet the conditions for a tungstic acid group. In other words, the coordination number of oxygen around the hexavalent tungsten ion is 6, and it does not form an atomic group equivalent to tungstic acid, _WO4 , so it is now considered to be a double oxide. It is idiomorphous, with oblique plate-like and pyramidal faces. Known examples of its production include Takatori Mine (closed) in Nanai Village, Nishiibaraki County, Ibaraki Prefecture (now Shirozato Town, Higashiibaraki County), and Ebisu Mine (closed) in Hirukawa, Nakatsugawa City, Gifu Prefecture. As of 2015, the International Mineralogical Union does not treat it as an independent species. The English name comes from Wolfram, the German name for tungsten.

タングステン（W）の鉱石鉱物の一つ。主として気成鉱脈ないし高温熱水鉱脈鉱床中に産し、石英を脈石鉱物とする。鉄重石およびマンガン重石と化学組成上連続する。鉄（Fe）とマンガン（Mn）の比が4対1から1対4のものをさす。一時は正タングステン酸第一鉄マンガン塩のように考えられていたが、その原子配列はタングステン酸基としての条件を満たしていない。すなわち6価のタングステンイオンの周囲の酸素の配位数が6で、WO₄というタングステン酸に相当する原子団をつくっていないため、現在は複酸化物とみなされている。自形は斜方板状、錐(すい)面が発達する。茨城県西茨城郡七会(ななかい)村（現、東茨城郡城里(しろさと)町）の高取鉱山（閉山）、岐阜県中津川(なかつがわ)市蛭川(ひるかわ)の恵比寿(えびす)鉱山（閉山）などの産出例が知られる。2015年の時点で、国際鉱物学連合では、これを独立種として扱っていない。英名は、タングステンのドイツ語名ウォルフラムWolframに由来する。
