The greatest masterpiece of 13th-century French allegory. It is one of the most beloved works of medieval literature and had a great influence on later generations. First, around 1230-40, Guillaume de Lorris was influenced by Ovid and Chrétien de Troyes and wrote a 4,058-line story using a traditional theme. Lorris's work is characterized by its aim to educate readers by illustrating the psychology of love in the form of a metaphorical story in which a woman is likened to a rose surrounded by thorns, explaining the rules of courtly love, and incorporating classical culture. Jean de Man continued the work from 1275 to 1280, considering it unfinished, and added a massive sequel of 17,722 lines. It directly rejects the view of love that praises women in the first part, and the author's philosophical and educative tendencies based on his extensive scholarship and his eloquent preaching are even more pronounced. His bold and scathing satire of women provoked fierce debates with Christine de Pizan and others.
