...The sho is mainly used in Kangen and is characterized by a double-note playing technique called "aitake" (gatsuchiku). When used in Saibara and roei, it is called "itsuchiku" or "ippon (one pipe) blown," and plays a single-note melody. Among the "played instruments," the so and biwa are used in Kangen and Saibara (but not in Bugaku, except for "Rindai" and "Seigaiha"), and emphasize the rhythm of the melody line with a unique accented sound pattern.
