A book written in 1529 by the German religious reformer M. Luther to teach the Christian faith to candidates and children. There are two versions, the Larger and the Smaller, which consist of explanations of the Ten Commandments, the Apostles' Creed, the Lord's Prayer, and other texts, and show the basics of Lutheran faith. Although its purpose is to teach doctrine orally, the Larger Catechism is not in the form of a question and answer. It is one of the catechisms written by various Christian churches since ancient times.
