State and Revolution - State and Revolution

Written by Lenin. A classic work on Marxist theory of the state. Written in August and September 1917, in the midst of the Russian Revolution. Chapter 7 is incomplete. It is a detailed examination and development of Marx and Engels' theory of the state. It was written to criticize Kautsky and Plekhanov, who approved of their country's war efforts under the pretext of defending the fatherland. Lenin argues that the state is nothing more than an institution for the ruling class to oppress the dominated classes, which arose along with class conflict, that in order to realize socialism, the bourgeois state must be violently smashed and the class dictatorship of the proletariat must be established, that the form of the socialist state is a commune-type state, under which democracy will develop further, bureaucracy will be overcome, and ethnic conflicts will disappear, and that the state will die out of its own accord with the transition to communism. There is a preparatory note for this work called "Notes on the State."
