…The process by which eels reach their spawning grounds after departing for the ocean is not known. The spawning grounds of Atlantic eels are also not known, but the spawning grounds of Atlantic eels were discovered by Danish marine biologist Ernst Johannes Schmidt (1877-1933). It was already known at the time that the larval eels are leptocephalans (leaf-shaped larvae) with transparent bodies shaped like willow leaves.
