An evergreen, thorny fruit tree of the family Carpinaceae. It can reach a height of 5-15 m. In young trees, the branches and trunks have many large thorns up to 10 cm long. The branches often have curved knots. The leaves are alternate, ovate-elliptical or lanceolate-oblong, thin, leathery, 6-12 cm long, pointed at the tip, wedge-shaped or rounded at the base, and coarsely sawtoothed at the edges. Usually dioecious, the small flowers are borne in small numbers in short axillary racemes, pale yellow-green in color. The drupes are berry-like, globose or obovate, and 1-2 cm in diameter. イイギリ科の常緑でとげのある果樹。高さ5~15mに達する。若木では枝,幹に長さ10cmに達する大きいとげが多数ある。枝はしばしば屈曲した木こぶを生ずる。葉は互生し,卵状楕円形または披針状長楕円形,薄い革質で長さ6~12cm,先端はとがり基部はくさび形ないし円形,縁にあらい鋸歯がある。通常は雌雄異株で,小さな花は腋生(えきせい)の短い総状花序に少数つき,淡黄緑色。核果は液果状で球形または倒卵形,直径1~2cm。
