International Women's Day is an international day for the emancipation of women and the construction of a peaceful society, held every year on March 8. It is also called International Women's Day. It is said to have originated from a demonstration held in New York on March 8, 1908, by American women demanding suffrage and other rights. At the Women's Conference of the Second International held in Copenhagen in 1910, German socialist C. Zetkin proposed that March 8 be designated as a day to "fight for complete political freedom and equality for women and the maintenance of peace" in commemoration of this movement in America, and the day was established. In Japan, it began on March 8, 1947, when members of the socialist groups Wednesday Society and Sekiran Society held a "women-only speech meeting" calling for political, social, and economic freedom for women.
