...There are factories producing textiles, chemical fertilizers, metallurgy, machinery, electricity, vegetable cans, beer, lumber, and furniture. The town has ancient origins; the Roman Emperor Trajan named it Augusta Trajana, but it fell into decline at the end of antiquity. There are many ruins in the area dating back to the 5th century, which has attracted the interest of the archaeological community.
