3-methylindole. C 9 H 9 N (131.18). A derivative of indole. It is found in excrement, beet roots, trunks of certain trees of the elm and lauraceae families, and coal tar. It is synthesized by heating propionaldehyde phenylhydrazone C 2 H 5 CH=NNHC 6 H 5 with zinc chloride. It appears as white leaf-like crystals with a strong, foul odor. Melting point 95 °C, boiling point 265-266 °C. 1.003. Soluble in hot water, alcohols, and ether. In the body, it is produced from tryptophan via indoleacetic acid. LD 50 3450 mg/kg (rat, oral).
