A storage device that supplements the main memory inside a computer. It is also called an auxiliary storage device. The RAM, a semiconductor memory used in main memory, loses data when the power is turned off, so it is necessary to save the data in the auxiliary storage device before turning off the power. Hard disks are the most common external storage device for computers today, and are used in most personal computers. Recently, Solid State Disks (SSDs), which can read and write data faster, have appeared as an alternative to hard disks, and are used in high-performance laptops. Other examples of external storage devices include CDs, DVDs, USB flash memory, and magnetic tapes.

コンピューターの内部にある主記憶装置（メインメモリー）を補助するための記憶装置のこと。補助記憶装置ともいう。メインメモリーに使用される半導体メモリーのRAMは、電源を切るとデータが消えてしまうため、電源を切る前に補助記憶装置に保存しておく必要がある。現在のコンピューターの外部記憶装置としてはハードディスクが代表的で、ほとんどのパソコンに使われている。最近では、ハードディスクに代わる記憶装置として、より高速に読み書きのできるSSD（Solid State Disk）が登場し、高性能なノートパソコンなどに採用されている。そのほかの外部記憶装置には、CD、DVD、USBフラッシュメモリー、磁気テープなどがある。
