Dachinkashigi - wage earning

Japanese: 駄賃稼 - だちんかせぎ
Dachinkashigi - wage earning
Carrying luggage or passengers on a horse's back and charging a fee. The activities of horse hirers in Otsu and other places were already known in the Middle Ages, but by the Edo period it had become common in various provinces. Earning a fee for packhorses was popular along roads where side routes and other inns were not well developed, but packhorse fare earning for the transport of goods was also seen among the relay cargo handled at the inns along the Five Highways. Also, in riverside areas where boat transport was available, and in Tsuminato, a hub for maritime traffic, there was active pack transport connecting the inland areas by land. In the Meiji and Taisho periods, people earned a fee at train stations using packhorses and wagons. → Nakauma/denma → Related items Sakuma-gaku
