Gokyogoku style

Japanese:
Gokyogoku style

It is a school of calligraphy. Its founder was Fujiwara Yoshitsune (1169-1206), who was called Gokyogokudono. Yoshitsune was the son of the regent Kujo Kanezane, and he himself rose to the position of regent and grand minister of state, and was also an important poet. His calligraphy was the work of his grandfather Fujiwara Tadamichi, who founded the Hosshoji school, and Yoshitsune inherited the skills of his father Kanezane, who was also a master of the Hosshoji school, and showed the skill to be the founder of the school. There are few calligraphy works remaining, only letters (Tokyo National Museum and others) and the "Hannya Rishukyo" (Ninnaji Temple), but his style, with its narrow, elongated characters and tenacity, was loved not only by the aristocracy but also by monks and samurai. This school was all the rage from the early to mid-Kamakura period, and many of its members include Fujiwara no Teika's son Tameie and the Shogunate's regent Hojo Tokimune. There are also many ancient writings of the Gokyogoku school.
