A general term for insects in the Bruchidae family of the Coleoptera order. Nearly 1,400 species are known from around the world, with many species found in the tropical regions of Asia, Africa, and Central and South America. 23 species have been recorded in Japan so far. There are 400 species in 24 families known as host plants for the larvae, and as the name suggests, many of them parasitize the seeds of plants in the legume family. Approximately 20 species also damage edible beans. They are also known in English as seed beetles, legume seed weevils, and pulse beetles.
