Born: March 31, 1729, Paris [Died] February 8, 1778. Paris. French actor. Real name Henri-Louis Cain. He was recognized by Voltaire and, while receiving his tutelage, performed most of his tragedies. Although he was not blessed with good looks, he is said to have captivated audiences with his sharp gaze and powerful acting. He brought the rationalism of the Enlightenment to the stage, and together with Cléron, he worked to discover a natural way of reciting, to study the period and local color of costumes, and to abolish the custom of having spectator seats on the stage.
