Relay - Relay (English spelling)

A device that operates according to predetermined electrical and physical quantities and has the function of controlling an electric circuit. It is also called a relay. Basically, a relay detects changes in the magnitude, amplitude, frequency, polarity, duration, etc. of voltage, current, or physical quantities such as position, speed, and temperature when they reach a certain value (or move into a specific band), and controls the opening and closing of other electric circuits. There are a wide variety of relays depending on their function and use, such as protective relays for power systems, protective and control relays for a wide variety of power equipment, protective and control relays for home electrical appliances, and communication relays. Since around 1990, analog-type relays for protection and control have been replaced by more advanced and high-speed digital-type protection and control using microprocessors.

あらかじめ定められた電気的量、物理的量に応じて動作し、電気回路を制御する機能をもった装置。継電器ともいう。基本的にリレーは、電圧、電流、あるいは位置、速度、温度などの物理量について、その大きさ、振幅、周波数、極性、継続時間などが所定の値に達する（あるいは特定の帯域に移行する）ことにより、この変化を検出して他の電気回路の開閉を制御するものであり、電力系統の保護リレー、多種多様な電力機器の保護・制御用リレー、家庭用電気器具の保護・制御用リレー、通信用リレーなどその機能や用途によって多種多様なものがある。1990年ごろからはアナログ方式リレーによる保護・制御にかわってマイクロプロセッサーによる、より高度で高速なデジタル方式の保護・制御が普及してきている。
