A haiku poet from the mid-Edo period. The Takakuwa clan. His real name was Tadayasu or Masayasu. His first pen name was Ranko. His other pen names included Niyaan, Hankabou, and Bashodo. He was born into a merchant family in Kanazawa, Kaga (Kanazawa City, Ishikawa Prefecture), but studied haiku enthusiastically and left his family job to do so. He lived in Kanazawa at first, but in his later years he moved to Kyoto and ran Bashodo near Kodaiji Temple in Higashiyama. He admired Basho's elegance, and drew people's attention to the Genroku haiku world, making great achievements by reprinting and annotating haiku books related to Basho. He was also granted the title of master of the Haikai Chukohana school by the Nijo family. His haiku style is gentle and elegant. Among his disciples were Baishitsu, Sokyu, and Nanimaru. He compiled and wrote many books, including "Ari no mama" (1769) and "Ochiba ko" (1771). He died on May 3, 1790.
