A general term for followers of the ideas of Wycliffe in England. The name Lollard is said to come from the medieval Low German word lullen (to sing in a low voice). They became influential at the end of the 14th century, and their preaching is said to have been one of the causes of the Wat Tyler Rebellion. Since the Wycliffe theory was rejected at the Council of Constance, this movement was also persecuted by the Roman Catholic Church, and after the failure of a rebellion led by one of its leaders, J. Oldcastle (c. 1378-1417), in the early 15th century, they went underground. →Related article Henry [V] Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
