Ishihara Sangyo was named as a defendant in the Yokkaichi Pollution Trial (along with five other companies: Showa Yokkaichi Sekiyu, Mitsubishi Petrochemical, Mitsubishi Chemical Industries, Mitsubishi Monsanto Chemical, and Chubu Electric Power). In addition, in 1968-69, the company discharged wastewater (200,000 tons per day) containing a large amount of waste sulfuric acid from the titanium oxide manufacturing process into Yokkaichi Port. Two factory managers at the time were charged with violating the Port Regulations Act and were found guilty (first instance) on March 17, 1980. The conviction was finalized on April 1 of the same year.
