Tetramethyldiarsine (CH 3 ) 2 As--As(CH 3 ) 2. A colorless, highly toxic liquid with an extremely unpleasant odor. Melting point -6°C, boiling point 165°C. It is obtained by reacting cacodylic chloride (CH 3 ) 2 AsCl with zinc. It ignites in air and burns to produce carbon dioxide, water, and arsenic trioxide. The dimethylarsino group (CH 3 ) 2 As-- is sometimes called the cacodylic group. Cacodylic is an important compound in the history of science. R.W. Bunsen studied the so-called "Cadet's liquid" (cacodylic oxide) from 1837 to 1843, determining its composition and synthesizing a series of about 40 new compounds.
