Dominican Order - Ordo Praedicatorum (Latin)

Dominican Order - Ordo Praedicatorum (Latin)

A religious order founded by Dominic in 1216 with the approval of Pope Honorius III. Its official name is the "Congregation of Preachers," and, together with the Franciscans, it is also known as a mendicant order. The spirit of the Congregation of Preachers is expressed in the words, "Contemplate and communicate the fruits of contemplation to others." While deepening their contemplation of Christ through communal living, prayer, theological study, and the three vows (obedience, poverty, and chastity), they also traveled throughout Western Europe to preach, and developed a theological enlightenment movement centered on universities in Paris, Bologna, Rome, and other places.

The Dominican ideal of spreading the truth of Christ has been lived out by countless Dominicans throughout history, like a prism splitting light into many colors. Thomas Aquinas passed on theology, Eckhart and H. Suso mystical contemplation, Fra Angelico religious beauty, while Saint Catherine of Siena inspired the Pope of Avignon, and Savonarola's eloquence was a precursor to the Protestant Reformation. Dominicanism was introduced to Japan in the early 17th century during the Christian era, and today it is being spread in Sendai, Fukushima, Tokyo, Kyoto, Ehime, Fukuoka, and other cities. There is a school called St. Thomas College (Kyoto City).
