Large Hinano Usutsubo - Large Hinano Usutsubo

A perennial plant of the Scrophulariaceae family (APG classification: Scrophulariaceae). Several roots swell and become spindle-shaped. The stems are upright and grow to about 1 meter in height. The leaves are ovate with many sawtooth edges. In summer, panicles form at the top and many flowers bloom. The corolla is dark reddish purple and urn-shaped. The capsule is ovate. It grows on the forest edges and grasslands of mountainous areas, and is distributed from Hokkaido to Kyushu and the Korean Peninsula. It is named after the fact that it resembles Hinano Usutsubo but is more magnificent. It is closely related to the Chinese medicinal plant S. ningpoensis Hemsl.

ゴマノハグサ科（APG分類：ゴマノハグサ科）の多年草。数本の根が肥大して紡錘状になる。茎は直立して高さ1メートルほどになる。葉は卵形で多くの鋸歯(きょし)がある。夏、上部に円錐(えんすい)花序をつくり多くの花をつける。花冠は暗紅紫色で壺(つぼ)形。蒴果(さくか)は卵形。山地の林縁や草地に生え、北海道から九州さらに朝鮮半島に分布する。名は、ヒナノウスツボに似るがより壮大なのでいう。中国の薬用植物の玄参(げんじん)S. ningpoensis Hemsl.に近縁である。
