Jean Lurçat

Jean Lurçat

French painter and tapestry artist. Born in Bruyères in eastern France. He initially studied medicine, but gradually became interested in painting, and studied at Victor Prouvé's studio in Nancy and Bernard Nodin's studio in Paris. In addition to the abstraction of colors and shapes influenced by Matisse and Picasso, he developed his own unique style of painting influenced by Surrealism, incorporating exotic and fantastical landscapes he saw during his travels to Spain, Africa, Asia Minor, and other places. He showed an interest in Aubusson tapestries, which have been famous since the 15th century, and in 1937, he created a number of decorative and fantastical works as an Aubusson designer. He is known for his contributions in reviving the tapestry tradition in modern times. His representative work is the Apocalypse Tapestry (Plateau, d'Assy Cathedral). He died in Saint-Paul, southern France. His brother André Lurçat (1894-1970) was a famous architect.
