Shariki [Village] - Shariki

Japanese: 車力[村] - しゃりき

A village in Nishitsugaru County, western Aomori Prefecture. Population 6,107 (1995). It is located in the northwest of the Tsugaru Plain, on the west bank of the downstream Iwaki River, and on the south shore of Lake Jusan. The western part of the village faces the Sea of Japan across the Byobuyama Sand Dunes, and is lined with a monotonous sandy beach called Shichiri Nagahama. Most of the rice paddy areas were developed by the Tsugaru Domain in the early modern period, but there are many low-lying, boggy fields called Koshikiri-ta, and they often suffered from poor harvests due to flooding of the Iwaki River and Yamada River, and backflow of seawater. In 1924, the first tenant farming association in the prefecture was formed, and the village is also known as a pioneer of the modern farmers' movement.

青森県西部，西津軽郡の村。人口6107(1995)。津軽平野北西部，岩木川下流西岸に位置し，十三湖南岸にあたる。村の西部は屛風山砂丘を隔てて日本海に面し，七里長浜と呼ばれる単調な砂浜が続く。水田地帯の大半は近世，津軽藩の新田開発によるものだが，腰切田と呼ばれる低湿田が多く，岩木川，山田川のはんらんや海水の逆流などによってしばしば凶作に見舞われた。1924年には県下で初めて小作組合が結成され，近代的農民運動の草分けの地としても知られる。
