An archipelago scattered in the Atlantic Ocean, about 100 km west of northwest Africa. Territory of Spain. It consists of seven islands and associated islets: Tenerife, La Palma, Gomera, Hierro, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, and Fuerteventura. It has many volcanoes, a warm climate, and little rain. It produces bananas, tomatoes, tobacco, and other crops. It was a winter resort for Europeans. Between the 13th and 16th centuries, the Kingdom of Castile conquered the indigenous Guanches and took possession of the islands. Since then, they have played an important role as a stopover point for maritime traffic and a fishing base. The central city is Las Palmas. Area: ^{7,494 km2} . Population: 2,082,655 (2011).
