Schönlein - Johann Lukas Schönlein

German physician. Born in Bavaria. Graduated from the University of Landshut and the University of Würzburg to become a physician. After working as a lecturer at Würzburg, he became professor of pathology and therapeutics in 1824, but was dismissed in 1832 for being a liberal. The following year, in 1833, he was invited to become a clinical professor at the newly established University of Zurich, and in 1839 he moved to Berlin as court physician and university professor. He devoted himself to the practice of scientific medicine through natural science observations and physicochemical diagnosis, and is known for his discovery of the pathogenic fungus of jock itch, purpura, and crystals in the intestines of typhoid fever patients, but he wrote little.

ドイツの内科医。バイエルン生まれ。ランズフート大学、ウュルツブルク大学を卒業して医師となった。ウュルツブルク大学講師を経て、1824年病理学と治療学の教授に就任したが、1832年自由主義者との理由で解任された。翌1833年新設のチューリヒ大学の臨床教授として招かれ、1839年侍医兼大学教授としてベルリンに転じた。自然科学的観察と物理化学的診断による科学的医療の実践に終始し、黄癬(おうせん)の病原糸状菌の発見、紫斑(しはん)病、腸チフス患者の腸管内結晶などの報告があるが、著述は少ない。
