British engineer. He started as an apprentice to a blacksmith, then became independent and started making machines. His feed-bed lathe, which he created in 1797, paved the way for precision machining of machine parts, forming the technological foundation for the Industrial Revolution, and he also contributed to the improvement of the steam engine.
