A fish of the Salmonidae family (illustration). It is also called sockeye salmon. The landlocked species includes the kokanee salmon. They migrate upstream from the Sacramento River in North America to the coastal waters of the North Pacific Ocean, including Alaska, Kamchatka, and the eastern coast of Hokkaido. They are silvery-white when living in the open ocean, but turn red in nuptial coloration during spawning season. Females are slightly darker than males. Males have significantly protruding upper and lower jaws that are bent into a hook shape. In Japan, a small number of kokanee salmon migrate upstream to the Tokachi River, where fertilized eggs were transplanted from the United States, and several thousand kokanee salmon migrate upstream to the Nishibetsu River, where fertilized eggs were transplanted from Lake Shikotsu.
