French astronomer. Became a member of the Meudon Observatory in 1920. He used polarized light to observe the surface conditions of planets, and in 1930 invented the new coronagraph, which could take pictures of the inner corona even outside of a solar eclipse. In 1933, he invented the Lyot filter, which allows only light of an extremely narrow wavelength range to pass through, making it possible to film monochromatic images of solar eruptions and prominences. フランスの天文学者。1920年ムードン天文台員。偏光を利用して惑星の表面状態を観測，1930年日食時外でも内側コロナの写真が撮影できる新型コロナグラフを考案。1933年にはきわめて狭い波長域の光のみを通すリヨ・フィルターを発明，太陽面爆発，紅炎などの単色光映画撮影を可能にした。
